The 89th Academy Awards 2017 will happen on Sunday, 26 February 2017 at Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center. There are movies from around the world competing for the prestigious award and hook up to their television screen for the final result.
We in India too will eagerly watch the award show with curiosity as Indian Origin actor Dev Patel is nominated for the “actor in a supporting role”.
If we see the history of Academy Awards there are not many Indian names who made it to the final stage of nominations. Though Bollywood movies are participating from the year 1957 for the best foreign film category.
Mother India was the first Indian movie who become the part of Academy awards and in fact was nominated for the foreign film category. Till date (2017) 40 movies were sent for the best foreign film category and only three made it to the nomination stage namely Mother India (1957), Salaam Bombay (1988) and Laagan (2001).
It’s a sorry state that movies winning national award for the best film in India do not even get through the entry level for Academy Awards. As on 2016, India sent 40 movies to the Awards but only 3 made it to the nominations. So, is there anyone who actually care about why our Bollywood movies not becoming the part of prestigious awards?
On the individual front, nobody forgot the awards won by Indian music director A R Rehman, Songwriter Gulzar and Sound Mixer Resul Pookutty in 2009. Other Indians who won Academy Awards were Bhanu Athaiya (best Costume Design) for 1983 movie Gandhi. Same year Ravi Shankar was also nominated for the best original score for the same movie but did not win.
Indian film director Satyajit Ray in 1992 received the prestigious Honorary Award from Academy for his achievement in the motion picture.
It is difficult to analyze why Indian movies are not making it the final round of academy awards. Prior to 2011, there were many controversies for nominating the Indian film for Academy Awards. Now only best film winning National Award is making it to the Academy Awards from India.
But do we really care about our movies winning Academy Awards or even nominating for the foreign film category? I don’t think we do.
Why Indian Movie Not Making to Academy Awards Nominations
The jury of Academy Awards (600 members I guess) are mostly American, why would they even like a Hindi, Tamil, Telegu or Bangla movie at all? It’s not only with Indian movies, the number of foreign movies making it to the best pictures category is 10 which explain itself.
Not sure we do! Almost every movie we send for the Oscar has controversy amount members about being the best selection. These fight for sending movies to Academy Awards sometimes gone out of hand and Indian Govt. have to interfere.
We Make Copies
True it is, there are not many movie makers in India who make original content. Many movies are so Inspired that they just shoot the same inspired scene with Indian actors in it. Not good right, one of such example was Barfi in 2012. You know who lost it to Barfi for Academy Awards nomination? Movies such as Paan Singh Tomar, Dirty Picture, and Kahaani.
Lack of Publicity
When we say we do not publicize our movies, it not commercially but to the right audience. We only publicize movies for commercial purpose to other territories where Indians are in numbers.
Too Many Movies
There are many other prestigious movie awards in the world but we do not send our movies there for the right audience. Movies who make it to such award functions are not the one who are winning in domestic award functions. So we are not even on the same page when it’s come to nominate the movies.
There are thousands of movies made in India every year in almost every local language the number is not even countable. Many of them make an amazing amount of money and loved by millions of Indians.
Let forget about awards given by other countries, out movies do not belongs there. We love our movies for their colours, entertainment and making the actors Gods among us and should not let anyone judge us.
